I am considering getting electronic ignition but not sure if its worth it, has anyone made the change and notice an increase in peformance?

yopu should go the electronic way,
just better all round no more points,
better fuel burn due to better spark at high revs, the list can go on,
so buy your self an elec dissy and enjoy

Electronic ignition is okay but if the car hasn't got a computer for it, like the ones in VK's etc. an easy one to install [if you can find it] is something like Optospark. It replaces the points with a disc and an infrared optic eye. I put one in a Datsun 240k once and never had to replace points again. Can be tricky to adapt for your car though, but easier than changing all the wiring and adding a computer.

I think you're talking about something totalyl different.
It was electronic ignition as in the VH's and VK's, whilst there isn't a computer there are not points in the dizzy, it's just a different type and MUCH MUCH better than a points one

I know VH's dont have an ECU, but they are electronic ingnition. VK onwards might have an ecu coz arent they EFI?

vk did come out with a fuel injected 202 in some models and were a briliant motor and yes the vl onwards were all fuel injected

but wat im asking is wat would u class the E.S.T unit as?? i mean ..it takes readings such as engine speed, oil temp, water temp, intake vaccum, engine run time ..and varies other things and computes it to figure how the timing should be to suit the conditions

i would call the E.S.T unit a throw away item,
more often than not they cause problems in the older cars,
when they was new they worked,
but i wouldn't call them a computer in the common use of the word,

Exactly Keggie,
They aren't computers. And not all VK's came out with efi, only a few did, most were carb fed

if u notice i did say "some models" i know not all of them were fuel injected as i have owned quite a few

the E.S.T unit is a piece of shit ..ur rite ..but i would still class it as a computer of sort

I didn't mean to cause such a fuss with that, just trying to help with a bit 'o alternative info. What classifies something as a computer is a real doozie of a question. In my opinion, we'd be better off without them. If they break you just replace 'em 'cause noone without a degree in electronic engineering can figure out how to fix them. At least with older technology the layman can use some fencing wire and a block of wood to fix it and get moving again. E.S.T does suck, I agree.

err ok so I'll steer clear from the e.s.t unit then ay,, I think I'll get one of those setups where you just rip out the points and place some better shit in ther and see how that goes

EST was an electric timing sensor fitted to carburettored vks. It uses an electronic sensor to detect when to spark, I think it gets triggered by pins on the flywheel or something.

This is a picture of an EST sensor I broke when I changed a gearbox years ago.
